Cloth vs Disposable

So, I'm considering switching to cloth diapers for this next little one. I'm going to a class on Saturday to learn the ins & outs and have gotten some great insight from my sis-in-law, who is a also a working mom. Any thoughts from anyone out there who has used cloth? Tips & pointers? Product suggestions?

wow, excited that you are going to a class to learn about them. there are tons of different options so I am sure that a class will help you get your head straight. here is my 2 cents:
for newborn I used prefolds
they are great
i don't think the diaper matters but I have only found one cover that doesn't leak...motherease is the brand.
also, pocket diapers are really popular these days but I don't have any. interested to hear what you learn

Hi Gretchen! I use cloth on Owen parttime. I use cloth when I'm at home and disposables when I go out and at nighttime.

I didn't fully use cloth until he was about 9 months old. In the newborn stages I only had prefolds (gerber) with the gerber rubber pants. I liked the prefolds, but found them very bulky for a little baby. Not that looks should matter, but the cute little outfits I had didn't look as cute when he had a big fluffy bum! :) I didn't like the gerber rubber pants at all - they got rips in them and I thought they looked so tight around the legs. I had one small Bummis Super Whisper Wrap (cover) and loved it along with the prefold!

I still use prefolds on Owen occasionally and like them for this stage. I got some more used Bummis covers in Medium (off eBay) and they work really well for us right now. I don't use diaper pins, I use Snappis which are wonderful! Bought the Snappies off Amazon.com

Since switching to cloth last fall, I splurged and bought a sample pack from softclothbunz.com. It had one FuzziBunz, one BumGenius and one Kissaluvs, plus a few more prefolds. I absolutely LOVE the BumGenius (a pocket diaper). I splurged some more and bought a few more used BG one-size-fits-all off eBay. Those are by far my FAV diaper!! They are expensive so I only have a few and I did buy them used, but I love them - so thin and very much like a disposable with how you fasten it and I haven't had any leaks.

Hope this helps. Glad you are going to a class for more info - wish I had done that. I spent/wasted so much time online when I should have done a class. ;)

Oh, I also have two gDiapers which I use cloth inserts with occasionally. They had a flushable insert which costs way too much money - more than disposables. Not my favorite cloth opion, but they are OK.

Let us know how it all goes for you!

I used Fuzzi Bunz for Simon. I also stayed home full time but I have heard the best reviews on them. They are easy to snap on, only have one insert, and they wash up nicely!

I bought them at nurturedfamily.com

Funny you should ask--you are at least the 4th person to talk to me about this in about a week. I loved cloth diapering. We used both prefolds and pockets. I was going to save my stash but am thinking of getting rid of it so holla if you think you want some of it.

I may re-post some old blog posts on the subject since everyone is asking me.
